Guyana land of the giants, the Essequibo river has one of the best fisheries in the world for arapaima gigas the largest species of scaled fish in the world. It is protected by the law and not allowed to be harvested. You can find these giants to 500 pounds documented by International Game Fish Association.
Along with the arapaima you can find lukanani also known as peacock bass a different species than anywhere else in abundance along with many other Amazonian species. King William Adventures is a company locally owned and operated by amerindians from Apoteri Village and is a sustainable fishery. In the 8 years with KWA’s guidance and Apoteri village has been managing the river all fish are thriving and the size of the fish are getting larger. The fishing season is from August to April.
King William Adventures stands out by only using artificial lures making sure these giants aren’t harmed well trained and licensed by the Guyana Tourism Authority. Record numbers of arapaimas has been caught and released in the last season 2022. It has been documented those 38 species of fish in the river system by international anglers. Anglers from all over the world come here to fish arapaimas on lures as this is a special place.
In 2018 International Game Fish Association awarded a special conservation award for work done in and around Apoteri Village for Conservation, a very prestigious award. If you have a chance to visit this area, please do it is one of the most special places in Guyana let alone the world with great birding, turtles, howler monkeys, giant river otters, jaguars, and sloths.
Late November is the great butterfly migration it is on for about 2 to 3 weeks. An angler’s paradise you won’t be disappointed visiting here. Breakfast includes amerindian bake, a fried bread and dry bake bread during the week along with eggs fresh fruit and juices. Lunch consists of different sandwiches, Guyanese chow mein. Dinner during the week consists of salad, wild meat, beef, chicken, fish, rice and beans. Local alcoholic beverages are limited to 144 beers per week and 8 bottles of local rum, unlimited bottled water and various sodas. More can be specially ordered, logistics on this trip are difficult as to the location as it is very remote.
All airport transfers included RT air charter to Apoteri and boat ride to Paumbo Island located 28 miles south of Apoteri village. Paumbo Island is a pristine location and located in strategic location, capacity is 10 anglers per week. Daily maid and laundry is included. Guyana is the only English speaking county in South America, native languages are Macushi and Waipashana.
Services included: All airport transfers, accommodations before and after, charter flight to Apoteri village 6 full days fishing, 15hp boats, cooler full of drinks, experienced local guide and all safety equipment,3 daily meals with snacks and appetizers, bottled water, soft drinks, beer and rum, maid services and laundry and use of fishing rods.
Services not included: international flights, medications, satellite phones, visits to local villages must be made in advance, lures and any breakage of fishing equipment.
Season: August to April and we only operate two weeks a month to give the fish rest so when you arrive fishing will be pristine. Unlike the amazon basin high water levels don’t affect fishing as much.
Day 1- arrive in Georgetown, overnight
Day 2 – charter flight to Apoteri, possible ½ day fishing depending on water levels.
Day 3 to 8 – 6 full days fishing
Day 9 – early morning transfer to Apoteri, flight back to Georgetown, rest at a hotel before your flight home
Flights: Caribbean air and Copa airlines
